“Levend Steen“ tot ontkieming gebracht
Bert Houkes creëert semi-abstracte sculpturen, die de natuurlijke eigenschappen van het ruwe materiaal zowel omarmen als tegenspreken. Hard en ruw veranderen in zacht en glad, met het oog voor de unieke variabele eigenschappen en afmeting van verschillende harde steensoorten.
Uit natuursteen worden rondingen blootgelegd die het oog langs het beeld leiden, waar lijnen en golven in elkaar overvloeien. Uit het minerale, levenloze materiaal ontstaat een uiterst organische creatie, met nadrukkelijke aandacht voor de natuurlijke eigenschappen van het onbewerkte blok steen.
Zorgvuldig geselecteerde sokkels uit knoestig hout en andere sprekende materialen zorgen ervoor dat deze unieke sculpturen deel worden van de ruimte waar ze in worden geplaatst – in het midden tussen menselijke creatie en natuurlijke gegroeide objecten.
“Het wonderlijke is voor mij de scheppende kracht der verbeelding – het ontstaan van gedachten direct van hand naar beitel en hamer.
Ik werk via het principe van taille directe, direct werken in het steen, en laat mijzelf graag verrassen.
De geboorte, of schepping, ontkiemt zich helder. Het vraagt om geduld en liefde, en het wonderlijke vinden in bijvoorbeeld de juiste spanning, verbetering, in de voorbewerkte vormgeving.
Het beeld wijst mij vaak de richting, naar schoon, of heel. Ik voed en ontwikkel mijn gedachte door er de tijd voor te nemen, of te laten.
Het avontuur, de verwondering, en uiteindelijk de afronding geven mij dat geluksgevoel, dat hemelse stofje. Belangrijk voor mij is “de kiem” – het innerlijke, het verborgene, het ontkiemen.

‘Living Stone’ brought to sprouting
Bert Houkes creates semi-abstract sculptures that both embrace and subvert the natural properties of the raw material. Hard and rough turn into soft and smooth, with an eye for the unique variable properties and size of different hard stone types.
From natural stone, curves are uncovered, leading the eye along the sculpture, where lines and waves merge. A highly organic creation emerges from the mineral, lifeless material, with emphatic attention to the natural properties of the unworked block of stone.
Carefully selected pedestals made of knotty wood and other expressive materials ensure that these unique sculptures become part of the space they are placed in – in the middle between human creation and naturally grown objects.

I work through the principle of ’taille directe’, working directly in the stone, and like to let myself be surprised.
Birth, or creation, germinates with clarity. It requires patience and love, and finding the miraculous in, for example, the right tension, improvement, in the pre-worked design.
The image often points me in the direction, towards clean, or whole. I nurture and develop my thought by taking my time with it, or letting it.
The adventure, the wonder, and finally the completion give me that feeling of happiness, that heavenly substance. Important to me is ‘the sprout’ – the inner, the hidden, the germination.
